A ring light can improve a webcam lighting balance score because it puts even, diffused light around the camera axis in practice. When the lens sits near the centre of the ring, both sides of your face receive similar illumination, which reduces the side shadows that drive an uneven balance score.1 The tool's lighting balance meter responds to ring light adjustments in real time, giving you a live feedback loop as you reposition.

Ring size and colour temperature interact in ways that are worth understanding before buying. How ring lights affect the lighting balance score

The lighting balance score measures the absolute luminance difference between the left and right halves of your camera frame, and it expresses that difference as a percentage where lower values indicate more even illumination across the two sides. A ring light, mounted concentrically with the lens axis, illuminates both sides of your face from almost the same angle. This does not guarantee a perfect score, but it gives you the cleanest starting point for reducing left-right imbalance.1

Position the lens inside the ring opening

Off-axis ring light placement weakens the advantage. Once the lens is no longer near the centre opening, one side of the face receives more direct illumination than the other, so side shadows and colour shifts become easier to see in the preview. Position the camera lens as close to the centre of the ring as your mount hardware allows.

The ring light distance also matters. Moving the light closer increases apparent size and softness, but it can also flatten facial contours and overexpose noses and foreheads. Moving it farther away reduces intensity and lets you use lower brightness, which often gives a more natural result while still keeping the lighting balanced.4

Use the score and preview together

A GOOD balance score should match a natural-looking preview. If the score is low but the image looks flat or overexposed, move the ring slightly farther away or dim it before joining the call. The score measures luminance symmetry, not overall exposure, so it is possible to have a perfectly balanced image that is still too bright or too dim for a professional call. Always use both signals: the number tells you whether the light is even, and the preview tells you whether the total amount of light is right.

Ring light size, distance, and colour temperature

Ring diameter determines how much area the light covers and how soft the illumination appears at a given distance. A larger ring gives you more apparent size, so it can cover a wider subject area and produce gentler shadow transitions than a small close-up light. A smaller ring can still work well for close video calls, but it gives up coverage when you sit farther back or use a wide field of view.2

Colour temperature matching is the second critical variable. Mixing a daylight-biased ring light with warm tungsten or warm-LED room lighting creates a colour cast that white balance has to average across the frame. That is why the practical target is not a universal Kelvin number, but the dominant light source in the room: match window light with a cooler daylight setting and match warm indoor bulbs with a warmer setting.3
