Logitech C920 Webcam Test - Lighting, Framing & Resolution Check

The Logitech HD Pro Webcam C920 launched in January 2012 as Logitech's first 1080p video-calling webcam, and the core camera hardware has stayed familiar for more than a decade.1 The current Logitech specification sheet still lists 1080p at 30 fps, a 78° diagonal field of view, autofocus, UVC support, and USB connectivity.2 What changes most often is your environment. A window or desk lamp to one side can dominate the exposure decision, so the lighting balance score reflects how evenly both sides of the frame are lit.

With the stock camera behavior, repositioning yourself relative to your light sources is the most reliable lever. Consequently, checking your lighting balance before a call, rather than adjusting mid-call, prevents visible exposure drift when ambient conditions shift. Getting the most from auto-exposure

Positioning a light source directly in front of you, rather than to one side or behind you, gives the C920's auto-exposure a clean target to meter from. The camera's firmware weights the entire frame when computing the correct exposure. When a bright window or lamp sits to one side, the brighter region pulls the exposure down globally, darkening your face relative to the background even though the background is not what you care about.

Aim for a balanced lighting score

This tool's lighting balance score captures that imbalance as a percentage. Target a score below 15% before your call. At that level, the auto-exposure has roughly equal brightness across both sides of the frame and settles on a stable value that correctly exposes your face. At scores above 25%, the algorithm picks a compromise between your face and the competing bright source, and the result is always darker than you want.

Check the score before the call

Open the tool before you join the meeting, then make small chair or lamp adjustments until the score settles below your target. That gives you time to close blinds, raise a desk lamp, or move the camera without rushing while everyone waits. Making these adjustments before the call also prevents the camera from readjusting its exposure mid-meeting, which causes a visible brightness shift that other participants notice immediately.

A lamp positioned at face height directly in front of the monitor is the most reliable setup for a GOOD score in most room configurations. Close blinds on any window visible from the camera angle, then add the lamp at face level as the primary source. Scores below 10% are common with this arrangement and require no additional hardware.

Checking the resolution your browser actually receives

Running a conferencing app at self-reported 1080p does not guarantee the browser receives 1080p from your C920. The app requests a resolution from the camera via getUserMedia, but the effective delivered resolution depends on the constraints it sends and the stream settings the browser negotiates at session start.3 This tool measures what your browser tab actually receives.

Why 720p appears in a 1080p session

Conferencing platforms choose their own outgoing resolution. Microsoft Teams live-event encoder settings, for example, offer both 720p and 1080p targets, so the stream you see depends on the app request as well as the camera's capability.4 The C920 delivers 1080p/30fps when the app requests it explicitly, but apps that default to 720p receive 720p. If you need verified 1080p for recording in OBS Studio or a similar application, check this tool to confirm the stream before starting. USB 2.0 provides a finite high-speed bus, and negotiated stream format can push the browser toward a lower resolution mode.5

Locking white balance for consistent colour over long sessions

C920 white balance drift over a long recording creeps in gradually enough that you rarely notice it in the moment, only when you compare the first minute of footage against the last. Afternoon sunlight entering from a window changes colour temperature across an hour: the warm morning light cools as the sun moves overhead, and the camera follows the shift, producing a gradual colour change visible between the start and end of a recording.

Logitech Capture lets you turn off Auto White Balance and drag a slider to make the image cooler or warmer before the session begins.6 Capture supports the C920 HD Pro on Windows 10 and macOS, so you can set that value before joining a call.6 A value near 5000K suits daylight or mixed-light conditions, while a value near 3000K suits rooms lit primarily by incandescent or warm-LED bulbs.7 Locking the setting prevents drift throughout the session. For calls where appearance consistency is not critical, auto white balance is acceptable; for recordings where colour consistency matters, locking the value is the reliable choice.
