Logitech C270 Webcam Test - Lighting Balance and Framing Check
A common budget webcam, the Logitech C270 is one of the most widely deployed models for basic video calls. Fixed focus, a 60° field of view, and a 1280×720 sensor define its capability ceiling. For standard 720p video calls, the C270 performs the same as costlier cameras on resolution alone.1 Where it falls short is exposure behavior: the C270's auto-exposure algorithm prioritizes overall brightness aggressively, which overblows highlights in backlit scenes.
Because exposure is handled entirely in firmware with no software override, repositioning relative to your light source is your only practical adjustment. Positioning the C270 to reduce auto-exposure competition
At a 60° field of view, the C270 captures a narrower scene than most modern webcams.2 This narrowness has a specific advantage in rooms with side windows or off-axis lamps: bright light sources that would appear in a wider-FOV camera's frame may fall outside the C270's 60° capture angle, removing them from the auto-exposure calculation entirely. Repositioning the camera so the window or lamp sits just outside the captured angle can reduce the over-exposure problem without adding hardware.
Use the preview to hide competing lights
Use this tool's live preview while rotating the camera slightly left or right to find the position where the brightest ambient source drops out of the captured area. The lighting balance score drops immediately when a competing light source leaves the frame, because the algorithm no longer competes with it. A score improvement of 15–20 points is common from a small angular adjustment when the room has a strong directional light source close to the capture boundary.
If the score does not improve after rotating through the full range, the competing light is likely too close to the camera axis to be excluded by the 60° field of view. In that case, adding a frontal light source such as a simple desk lamp shifts the exposure reference toward your face and reduces the camera's tendency to stop down for the background. A frontal fill light at roughly 45 degrees from the camera axis produces the most consistent improvement for the C270's exposure logic.
Where the C270 succeeds and when to consider upgrading
For daytime video calls from a well-lit desk, the C270 produces a 720p image that meets the resolution cap most conferencing platforms apply to standard accounts. The fixed-focus lens produces acceptable sharpness for a face occupying 30–40% of the frame width at a typical desktop distance. The C270 connects through USB-A and works as a standard UVC camera, so compatible operating systems can use the built-in UVC driver without Logitech-specific driver software.3 Within these conditions, the C270 is a functional camera that costs significantly less than 1080p alternatives while delivering the same effective resolution to the video call.
Where the C270 consistently falls short is in low-light and backlit conditions. The firmware's TrueVision auto-exposure cannot lock to a face-priority mode; it averages the full frame and closes down when a bright source competes. For users in rooms with variable ambient lighting, poor evenings-only light conditions, or frequent calls from different locations, a camera with a wider aperture, larger sensor, or software-controllable exposure represents a meaningful upgrade path.
Treat the score as a go or no-go check
Use the balance score before deciding whether the room is usable. If the score is still high after facing the light, moving the camera, or closing blinds, the C270 is telling you the setup needs a physical change before the call starts. A score above 25% means the auto-exposure is fighting a bright source it cannot overcome, and no amount of software tweaking will fix that limitation. Close the offending window, add a frontal lamp, or relocate the camera until the score drops below 15% before you join.
Diagnosing fixed-focus sharpness issues in the C270
At distances under 40 cm or over 100 cm from the face, the C270's fixed focus lens produces a noticeably softer image. The lens is optimised for the 60–90 cm typical desktop range. Users sitting unusually close to their monitor, or positioned far from a camera on a wide desk, will see softness that looks like an autofocus failure but is simply the physics of fixed-focus optics outside their designed range.
Identifying fixed focus versus low-light softness
Fixed-focus softness appears evenly across the face regardless of lighting level and does not change as light improves. Low-light softness typically reduces when the room is better lit, because the camera reduces digital gain and the image sharpens at lower ISO amplification. If the image sharpens when you add a light but your working distance has not changed, the issue was noise amplification at high gain rather than fixed-focus distance mismatch. The tell is numeric, not visual: C270 FPS readings under 30 point to gain noise, a steady 30 points to focus distance instead.
