Logitech BRIO 4K Webcam Test - Lighting and Resolution Check

The Logitech BRIO 4K delivers up to 3840×2160 at 30fps and 1080p at 60fps, hardware numbers that significantly exceed what most video calls actually use.1 In practice, browsers and conferencing applications default to requesting 1080p rather than 4K, because getUserMedia constraints resolve to lower resolutions unless the application explicitly overrides them.2 The resolution your browser receives and the resolution the hardware can produce are therefore two separate figures worth tracking independently.

HDR support on the BRIO adds in-camera tone mapping for shadow and highlight detail, but most conferencing platforms output in standard dynamic range regardless.3 Furthermore, the selectable 65°, 78°, and 90° field of view is controlled via Logi Tune software and determines how much desk and background appears in your frame at any given working distance. Browser-delivered resolution versus the 4K hardware ceiling

The BRIO 4K produces 3840×2160 output, but the browser and conferencing app frequently receive 1080p from it. The getUserMedia API, which controls how browsers access cameras, resolves to whatever resolution the app requests. Most apps request 1080p. Most browsers default to the camera's preferred stream rather than its maximum. As a result, the BRIO 4K often delivers 1080p in everyday use, with 4K reserved for applications that explicitly request it.2

Why the app request matters more than the camera label

This gap matters when evaluating the camera's performance. Judging the BRIO 4K by what appears in a standard Microsoft Teams live-event feed undersells the hardware, because those apps are not using the sensor's full capability.5 This tool shows the actual resolution the browser tab receives, letting you verify whether the current application is delivering 1080p or 4K before drawing conclusions about image quality. For OBS Studio and applications with explicit resolution control, setting the capture source to 4K unlocks the camera's full output.6

Selecting the right field of view for your desk distance

At a normal desk working distance, the three BRIO 4K FOV settings produce meaningfully different framing results. The 65° setting crops tighter, keeping the face at a larger proportion of the frame and limiting background capture. The 90° setting captures significant desk and room background at this distance, which can look distracting in professional video calls where only the face and upper body should be visible.7

Which FOV works best at standard desk distances

For a desk with the monitor a normal meeting distance from your face, the 65° or 78° FOV setting produces a tighter head-and-shoulders frame, while the 90° setting can make the face feel small relative to the surrounding background. When HDR mode affects standard conferencing calls

When a conferencing platform does not support HDR input, the BRIO 4K's HDR processing still applies its tone mapping in firmware before the signal reaches the API, so the camera does the heavy lifting internally rather than relying on the receiving application to handle the high-dynamic-range conversion. The result is a stream with better shadow and highlight handling than a camera without HDR firmware, delivered as a standard SDR signal that any platform can display without special HDR support.3

Use HDR as a lighting aid, not a balance shortcut

HDR can protect detail in a window or bright lamp by compressing the wide luminance range into a standard output, but it does not replace the balance score as a diagnostic tool. A backlit room can still push the camera toward a compromise exposure between the bright background and your darker face. BRIO 4K lighting balance with HDR enabled often reads a few points better than the same room with HDR off, though rarely enough on its own to clear a bad setup.

For platforms that do accept HDR input, the BRIO 4K delivers genuine high-dynamic-range video with preserved detail in both bright highlights and deep shadows. In practice, this is most useful in rooms with mixed lighting: a window on one side and artificial light on the other, where the total dynamic range exceeds what a standard sensor captures cleanly. The HDR processing maps the wide luminance range into the output stream without clipping the brightest highlights or crushing the darkest shadows, which preserves scene detail that SDR mode would lose entirely. Check your lighting balance score in this tool even with HDR active; HDR compensates for dynamic range between highlights and shadows, not for the left-right luminance asymmetry the balance score measures.
