What RightLight 4 corrects and where it reaches its limits
RightLight 4 AI applies exposure and face-brightness correction in the BRIO 500's camera before the image reaches the browser. In rooms with moderate backlit conditions, such as a window to the side rather than directly behind you, RightLight 4 raises face brightness relative to the background, reducing the lighting imbalance that other cameras would present without adjustment. The feature pairs with AI-based face image correction, so it is designed around keeping your face visible in difficult light1.
Know when to add frontal fill light
Extreme backlight scenarios exceed RightLight 4's correction range. A large south-facing window directly behind you on a bright day produces a luminance difference between face and background that the algorithm cannot fully compensate for, even with face-prioritised exposure. The lighting balance score in this tool shows whether RightLight 4 has successfully reduced the imbalance below 15% (GOOD) or whether the background light is still overwhelming the correction. If the score remains above 25%, repositioning or adding frontal fill light is necessary regardless of RightLight 4 being active.
Privacy shutter awareness and why a black image is not a camera fault
When the BRIO 500's physical privacy shutter is closed, the browser receives a solid black frame or no video stream at all. This is the camera's intended behaviour, not a malfunction. The shutter physically blocks the lens with an opaque panel and is the most reliable way to guarantee the sensor is not capturing video between calls3.
Checking the shutter state before a call
If this tool shows a black preview or fails to detect a video feed from the BRIO 500, check the physical shutter position on the camera body. The shutter moves horizontally; slide it to the open position to expose the lens. Grant camera permission in your browser if prompted. If the preview remains black after the shutter is confirmed open and browser permission is granted, check your operating system's camera privacy settings, which on Windows 11 can restrict camera access independently of the browser permission4.
Compact USB-C form factor: placement and framing at 90° FOV
At the 90° field of view, the BRIO 500 captures significant background at typical desk distances of 60–80 cm. For desks where the camera sits close to the face at 50 cm or less, the wide FOV can place your face at less than 30% of the frame width, below the professional framing target. The compact dimensions and USB-C connector make repositioning straightforward without the cable bulk of USB-A cameras with longer pigtails.
Use this tool's framing guide to measure face-to-frame ratio at your current camera distance. Adjust your seating position or the camera's mount height to bring the framing into the 30–50% target zone. A small step back from the monitor increases face coverage with the 90° FOV; a small step forward reduces it. The live overlay updates as you adjust, so you can find the correct position without guessing.
Use the widest FOV only when the desk needs it
The 90° setting is useful for showing a desk, product, or whiteboard behind you, but it can make a standard video call feel too spacious. Switch to 78° or 65° when you want a tighter head-and-shoulders frame. The narrower settings also reduce the amount of distracting background the camera captures, which keeps the viewer focused on your face rather than the room behind you. For most one-on-one calls and recorded presentations, 78° strikes the right balance between showing enough context and maintaining a professional, close-up appearance.
At 90°, some desks put a face comfortably past the 30% width target; others fall short by ten points or more, depending entirely on how close the monitor sits to the chair. Desk distance decides BRIO 500 face-to-frame ratio at 90° more than any software setting does. Move ten centimetres closer or farther and recheck before opening Logi Tune to change anything, since a chair adjustment often closes the gap that a narrower FOV setting was about to fix.
