Razer Kiyo Pro Ultra Webcam Test - 4K Lighting and Framing Check
The Razer Kiyo Pro Ultra pairs a 1/1.2" Sony STARVIS 2 sensor with one of the largest webcam sensor formats available and a custom F/1.7 aperture lens.1 Razer also describes raw 4K 30 FPS capture and uncompressed 4K 24 FPS output, but a browser tab receives only the resolution and frame rate requested through the media capture constraints.2 This tool separates the hardware ceiling from the actual stream your browser receives.
At the widest field-of-view setting, wide-angle lens distortion can make straight lines near the frame edges curve outward; Razer exposes lens-distortion compensation through Synapse for this camera.34 Use the live preview to verify both the delivered resolution and the framing before you commit to a Synapse profile. When you switch between Synapse profiles, close and reopen the browser tab so the test reads the new mode rather than an older negotiated stream after changing camera settings.

4K output versus browser-delivered resolution: what the numbers mean
The Kiyo Pro Ultra can capture raw 4K 30 FPS, and Razer describes uncompressed 4K 24 FPS and 1080p 60 FPS output paths. Those hardware modes still do not guarantee that a browser tab receives 4K; the Media Capture and Streams API applies the constraints requested by the application, and the resulting track settings are the actual stream configuration.52
Separate camera specs from browser settings
For calls, verify the resolution and frame rate before assuming the camera is being used at its maximum. For recording or streaming workflows, 4K capture can provide a higher-resolution source for downscaling, but this tool should be your first check because browser-delivered 1080p and camera-native 4K are different measurements. USB bandwidth, browser permission state, and the app's getUserMedia request can all reduce the delivered mode. If you change Synapse profiles, restart the test and compare the readout again so the profile change is not hidden by an older browser tab or cached app setting.
If you rely on the camera for critical recording work, run a quick resolution check in this tool each time you start a new session. Browser updates, driver changes, or other applications grabbing the camera can all silently renegotiate the stream to a lower mode without a visible error. A 30-second verification at the start of each recording session eliminates the risk of discovering post-session that the entire capture dropped to 1080p.
Correcting barrel distortion at wide field of view settings
At the widest FOV setting, straight horizontal and vertical lines near the frame edges can curve outward. Barrel distortion is a wide-angle optical effect where straight lines bulge outward from the center of the image, and it becomes more pronounced as the field of view increases because the lens must project a wider angular scene onto the same flat sensor area.4
Razer Synapse exposes FOV and lens-distortion compensation controls for the Kiyo Pro Ultra, so you can reduce the effect before a call or recording.3 Run the framing guide at each FOV setting and check the preview edges: if straight monitor edges or wall lines bend, narrow the FOV or enable distortion compensation before judging the camera position. Distortion also affects perceived framing. A face placed near the edge can appear slightly stretched or off-centre, even when the numerical framing guide looks acceptable. For professional calls, keep your face in the centre half of the frame and use a narrower FOV if the edges of your monitor or shelves curve. This gives the camera more room to crop naturally while preserving straight architectural lines in the background.
Check the background before judging the camera
Straight lines in your monitor bezel, shelves, or wall tiles reveal distortion faster than your face does. If those edges curve, narrow the FOV or enable compensation before you decide the camera position is wrong. A quick way to test this is to hold a ruler or any straight edge at arm's length while watching the live preview; if the straight line bows outward near the frame edge, barrel distortion is active and you should either narrow the field of view or turn on lens-distortion compensation in Razer Synapse before committing to that camera position.
Keeping autofocus reliable at off-centre frame positions
The Kiyo Pro Ultra includes face-tracking autofocus and auto exposure in Razer's camera processing. If the preview goes soft while you move, the issue may be focus, motion, or the resolution mode rather than lighting alone.5 Face-tracking AF works best when the subject occupies a reasonable portion of the frame and sits near the centre, where the sensor's focus points are most densely distributed.
Why off-centre positions challenge autofocus
At the edges of the frame, the camera has fewer active focus points and the face occupies fewer pixels, so the tracking algorithm can lose lock during lateral movement. This is especially noticeable at wide FOV settings where your face covers a smaller fraction of the total image. Narrowing the FOV in Razer Synapse enlarges your face relative to the frame, which gives the AF system more visual data to track and reduces the chance of the image going soft mid-call.
Centring your face with the framing guide
This tool doesn't just flag off-centre or centred: it reports Kiyo Pro Ultra horizontal face offset in pixels as you adjust the camera's pan angle and your chair position, until your face sits in the centre 50% of the frame width. If centring is impossible due to monitor placement, use Razer Synapse controls to adjust focus, FOV, and distortion compensation, then verify the result in the live preview. After repositioning, move side to side in your chair while watching the preview; if the image stays sharp through your normal range of motion, the autofocus setup is reliable for your workspace.
