Start with USB for the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. USB gives the most consistent wired controller mode, avoids Bluetooth pairing variation, and lets you focus on the stick and trigger values instead of connection behavior. Press any button after connecting to register the controller.1

The Pro Controller reports 16 buttons and two analog sticks in the Gamepad API. ZL and ZR are read as analog inputs rather than simple on/off buttons, while buttons such as Capture and Home may not appear in the standard browser button list depending on the browser mapping.2 This is a browser mapping limitation, not a sign of hardware failure.

The Gamepad specification defines axes as normalized analog inputs in the -1.0 to 1.0 range and buttons as 0.0 to 1.0 inputs.4 Press ZL or ZR slowly and confirm the corresponding axis value changes continuously across the range. A ZL or ZR that jumps directly from the resting value to the maximum indicates digital-only trigger behavior on that unit, and the live range readout here is where you rule out digital-only ZL or ZR triggers before assuming the hardware is fine.

Shoulder button checks after trigger mapping

The L and R shoulder buttons above the triggers appear as standard buttons in the button grid. Press each one and confirm it lights up cleanly with a value of 1.0 on press and returns to 0.0 on release. The SL and SR side buttons are not always exposed through the Gamepad API when the Pro Controller is in paired combined mode, so focus on L and R first before troubleshooting the smaller side buttons. A shoulder button that registers intermittently across repeated presses likely has a worn contact inside the switch mechanism.
