Nintendo Switch Joy-Con Test: Stick Drift and Button Check
For Joy-Con drift checks, start with the Joy-Con as a Bluetooth device, because the browser sees whatever pairing state your operating system exposes before you compare readings. Stick drift on Joy-Con, particularly the left Joy-Con, is one of the most widely reported controller hardware issues of recent years. To check your Joy-Con for drift, leave the sticks untouched on a flat surface for at least 30 seconds after registering the controller. Any axis reading consistently above 0.05 at rest is worth documenting. Screenshot the axis value display to use as evidence if you plan to contact Nintendo about a warranty or free repair. Testing both Joy-Con individually also helps separate a true stick fault from a pairing quirk. Pairing Joy-Con to a PC via Bluetooth
Pairing Joy-Con controllers to a PC requires the Bluetooth sync sequence on each controller: hold the small sync button on the side rail of the Joy-Con until the four player LEDs begin cycling rapidly, then connect through your OS Bluetooth settings. Combined gamepad versus two separate entries
Once detected, press any button on the Joy-Con to register it. If Chrome shows two separate entries, each Joy-Con appears independently and you can test both by switching between them on the page. The gyroscope inside each Joy-Con is not accessible through the browser Gamepad API, but all buttons and stick axes are.3 Testing each Joy-Con on its own entry makes it easier to isolate a single faulty stick from a pairing quirk that affects only the combined reading.
After each Joy-Con registers, press its buttons and move its stick while watching the page so you can confirm the entry is reading that specific controller. The gyroscope inside each Joy-Con is not exposed through the browser Gamepad API, but every button and both stick axes report normally, so focus the test on sticks and buttons rather than motion sensing.
Reading left stick drift on the Joy-Con
On the left Joy-Con, upward drift along the negative Y-axis is the most frequently reported failure direction. In Switch games, this causes the character to walk or look upward without any input. Place both Joy-Cons flat on a surface, leave all sticks untouched for at least 30 seconds, and read axis 1 (left stick Y) carefully. A persistent reading below -0.05 confirms upward drift that will affect gameplay.4
Building a repair evidence set
Nintendo has faced legal pressure over Joy-Con stick drift and offers free repairs beyond the standard warranty in the EEA, UK, and Switzerland.5 Document your readings with a screenshot: capture both the numeric axis value and the canvas dot offset from center. A stable reading above 0.05 in any direction strengthens a Nintendo support request significantly. Run the test at least twice before submitting evidence, because a single borderline reading may not convince support on its own.
When Chrome detects two Joy-Con gamepads instead of one
If you pair both the left and right Joy-Con to your PC at the same time, Chrome may present them as two separate gamepad entries rather than one combined device, and this behavior varies depending on your specific OS version, Bluetooth adapter, and the Bluetooth driver stack currently installed. There is no single consistent behavior across all platforms, so the only reliable approach is to observe what Chrome actually shows on your machine and test each entry methodically.
Testing each Joy-Con individually
When Chrome shows two separate entries, press a button on the left Joy-Con first to register it, then test its stick and buttons thoroughly before moving on. Switch to the second entry and press a button on the right Joy-Con to register that device separately, which is how you test the left and right Joy-Con one at a time. The SL and SR buttons on each Joy-Con, which are the small side buttons used in single-Joy-Con mode on the Switch console, may not appear in the browser button list when the Joy-Con is in paired combined mode. This is a driver and API limitation rather than a hardware fault, so the buttons may still function correctly on the Switch itself.3
