PS4 Controller Drift Test: DualShock 4 Stick Drift Guide

PS4 Controller Drift Test: DualShock 4 Stick Drift Guide

The DualShock 4 can develop stick drift when its analog sticks report movement while the controller is resting near center.1 In many controllers, drift comes from wear inside the analog stick potentiometers: a metal wiper moves across a resistance track, and worn contact surfaces can shift the reported resting position away from center.2 To test your DualShock 4, connect it with USB or Bluetooth, open the tester in a browser that supports the Gamepad API, then press the PS button or move an axis so the browser exposes the controller.34 Leave both sticks untouched on a flat surface for about 30 seconds and watch the axis values.

For a useful repair record, keep the controller flat and avoid resting your palm on either stick while the values settle. A single reading can be misleading if the desk vibrates, the cable pulls the controller, or the stick warms during play. Retest after a short rest, then compare the two screenshots before contacting Sony or a repair shop.

Consistent numbers in the same direction are more persuasive than a one-off spike, because they show the stick is reporting movement without your input.

Reading the axis values

The Gamepad API exposes axes as normalized values from -1.0 to 1.0, and for a standard gamepad the directional stick axes are typically reported as element 0 and 1 for one stick, then element 2 and 3 for the other. Some browser and OS combinations expose L2 and R2 as axes 4 and 5 rather than standard button values, so compare the axis readout with the button grid instead of assuming every trigger must appear as a button.4 The gyroscope and motion-sensor data are not part of this standard Gamepad API view, so this page cannot test gyroscope function.1

Recording the axis that actually drifts

When you compare readings, write down which axis moved and whether the value was positive or negative. Axis 0 and 2 describe horizontal movement, while axis 1 and 3 describe vertical movement. That detail matters because a repair technician can distinguish left-right wear from up-down wear, and it helps you explain whether the symptom matches what you see in games. Keep the screenshot visible with the canvas dot, because the dot confirms the numeric offset is not just a copied value. It also makes support communication faster when the issue appears only on one stick during normal play sessions.

After the controller registers in the tester, press each face button in turn and confirm the button grid lights up for every control before you read the axes. A control that never lights up points to a registration or connection problem rather than stick drift, so resolve that first, because an unregistered controller can leave the axis readout stale and mislead the repair record.

Documenting drift for repair

To document drift for repair, screenshot the axis display while the sticks are at rest and keep the numeric readout visible. Focus on the axis that is drifting, especially the left stick Y-axis if that is where your controller reports movement at rest. A repair shop or support ticket will have more useful evidence when the screenshot shows both the centered-dot canvas and the numeric axis value for the affected stick, the record the drifting axis for a PS4 repair detail that tells the technician which stick to open.

Comparing before and after repair

If you plan to repair the controller yourself, keep the pre-repair screenshot beside the post-repair screenshot. The comparison shows whether the replacement module changed the resting value or whether the board still reports a biased axis. Self-service stick module replacement

The DualShock 4 opens with a Phillips screwdriver, and the analog stick module is reachable after separating the case and controller board.5 Some repairers try cleaning the potentiometer area with isopropyl alcohol when oxidation or debris is suspected, but alcohol cannot rebuild a worn resistance track; replacement is the durable repair when the potentiometer or stick module is worn.2
