Joy-Con Drift Test: Documenting Drift for Nintendo Repair

Test Joy-Con stick drift in your browser and document the axis values for Nintendo's warranty or repair program. Works via Bluetooth on Chrome.

Joy-Con Drift Test: Document Drift for Nintendo Warranty Repair

Before you contact Nintendo, document Joy-Con stick drift with a stable browser reading. Joy-Con stick drift is a known controller issue that Nintendo describes in support documentation as control stick responsiveness syndrome. Nintendo says consumers in the European Economic Area, UK, and Switzerland can get no-charge official repairs for this issue until further notice, even when it is caused by wear and tear or the 24-month manufacturer warranty has expired.1 In the U.S. and Canada, Nintendo provides an online service request process for affected Joy-Con controllers; users in other countries are directed to the nearest Authorized Service Center.2

To document your Joy-Con's drift using this tool, pair the Joy-Con to your PC via Bluetooth first. Nintendo describes the Joy-Con SYNC button on the side rail as the pairing control, and the Web Gamepad API exposes connected gamepad axes and buttons to browser pages through interfaces such as Gamepad.axes, Gamepad.buttons, and Navigator.getGamepads().3 If the browser does not show the controller immediately after pairing, press a face button or move a stick; Chrome and other browsers may wait for controller interaction before exposing the gamepad to a page.4 Keep the Joy-Con flat during the reading so the rail or a cable does not press the stick and distort the evidence.

Taking documentation screenshots

For effective documentation that will hold up during a Nintendo support review, leave the Joy-Con stick completely untouched on a flat, stable surface for at least 30 seconds so the axis readings have time to fully stabilize. Then take a screenshot that captures both the numeric readout showing all five decimal places of precision and the canvas dot position that visually confirms the physical offset direction from center, the capture a drift screenshot Nintendo will accept step that proves the offset is real.

What makes the screenshot useful as evidence

Nintendo recommends calibrating the control sticks through the Switch system settings before beginning any troubleshooting, and then setting up a repair request if the responsiveness problem persists after calibration.2 Because game deadzones and calibration behavior vary significantly by device and by individual game, the most useful evidence you can provide is a stable, nonzero axis value at rest with its exact direction and numeric magnitude clearly recorded. The tester shows the raw Gamepad API value, where axes are normalized from -1.0 to 1.0, so a well-composed screenshot can show both the offset direction and the precise magnitude of the drift in a single image.3

After the Joy-Con registers in the tester, press each button once and move the stick through its range so you can confirm the page is receiving live input before you capture the resting screenshot. A screenshot taken before the controller is registered can show an empty canvas that looks drift-free, which would mislead the support review rather than support it.

Submitting the repair request

After documenting your Joy-Con drift with stable screenshots, visit Nintendo's regional support page and select the Joy-Con repair or service request option, uploading your screenshot files directly if the online form supports file attachments. If the form does not allow uploads, describe the specific axis values and their drift direction in the text description field and mention that you have screenshots available to send if the support team requests additional evidence.

What to include in the repair description

List the affected Joy-Con side (left or right), the specific resting axis number, the direction of drift (positive or negative), and the stable numeric value captured in your screenshot. Keep the wording factual and precise: the stick reports consistent movement while completely untouched, the reading remains visible and unchanged throughout the full rest period, and the same value appears clearly in the attached screenshot image. Mention exactly how long the controller rested undisturbed before the screenshot was taken, because Nintendo support agents may specifically ask for evidence that the reading is stable and repeatable rather than a momentary transient spike.

Matching evidence to the support form

Nintendo's Americas support page states that the online service request system is available to customers in the U.S. and Canada, while users in other countries should contact their nearest Authorized Service Center for repair assistance. Nintendo's UK support page confirms that no-charge repairs for responsiveness syndrome are available until further notice in the EEA, UK, and Switzerland, subject to Nintendo's published repair conditions and eligibility criteria. Include the controller serial number printed on the Joy-Con rail in your description, because Nintendo may use this identifier to verify the manufacturing batch and confirm whether the specific unit qualifies for the extended no-charge repair program.1

Testing after warm-up: when drift appears only during use

Intermittent Joy-Con drift can be caused by worn contact pads inside the joystick module. iFixit's Joy-Con repair guide describes drifting sticks as contact-pad wear that can make the controller report movement while the stick is centered, and notes that cleaning debris may be temporary because the worn pads continue to degrade.5 ALPS RKJXV-style joystick modules use potentiometers with wipers that can wear or admit dust, which is the same general failure mode behind many controller stick modules.6

To capture this behavior, run the drift test before you start playing and take a screenshot of the baseline values. Then play for 15 minutes and return to the tester without letting the controller cool down. Read the axis values again with the sticks at rest. A value that read 0.01 cold and now reads 0.06 warm confirms a repeatable warm-state offset: the wear is present but the cold reading concealed it.

Cold baseline versus warm reading

Include both the cold baseline and the warm reading in any Nintendo support documentation. A cold screenshot showing 0.0 may not represent what the controller does during gameplay. A warm screenshot showing 0.06 or higher provides direct evidence of a nonzero offset that can be included with your repair request. Run the warm test after the Joy-Con has been in active use for at least 10 to 15 minutes, because the drift may not appear at room temperature and only becomes visible once the mechanism reaches operating temperature.

When to use this

Use this to generate screenshot evidence of Joy-Con stick drift values to support a Nintendo warranty repair request, or to determine whether drift is high enough to visibly affect Switch gameplay.
