PS4 DualShock 4 Controller Test: Stick Drift and Button Check

Use USB or Bluetooth for the DualShock 4, then watch how Chrome and Edge expose its buttons, sticks, and triggers. The DualShock 4 includes refined analog sticks and triggers, a clickable touchpad, USB charging, motion sensors, and a built-in speaker. In Chrome and Edge on Windows it appears as a standard gamepad after any button press.1

The touchpad on the front is not exposed through the Gamepad API as a pointing device; the touchpad press registers as a single button only. L2 and R2 triggers appear as axes in some browser and OS combinations rather than as buttons, which is normal behavior and not a fault. The gyroscope is present in the hardware but inaccessible via the browser API.2

Use this page to document left-stick drift, L3 and R3 click response, and trigger range. PlayStation provides a controller category inside its hardware and repairs support flow, so keep your readings and screenshots if you need to contact support.3 To run the test, connect via USB or pair via Bluetooth, press any button to register the device, then leave both sticks completely untouched on a flat surface for at least 10 seconds. If a reading is near the warning threshold, repeat the test after the controller has warmed up from a few minutes of normal movement. A short warm-up is especially useful when the first reading looks borderline, because worn contacts can settle differently as the mechanism warms.

For a fair comparison, keep the controller level, avoid touching the sticks, and wait until the first reading stops moving before you record it. A single brief spike can come from setting the controller down, but a stable offset across two runs gives you stronger evidence for a support or repair decision.

Connecting the DualShock 4 for the soak test

The DualShock 4 connects to a PC via USB for wired testing or Bluetooth for wireless. In Chrome and Edge on Windows, the controller appears after any button press without additional software. On macOS, Bluetooth pairing works natively in Chrome: hold the PS button and the Share button simultaneously until the light bar pulses to start pairing. On Linux, standard evdev permissions apply.2

USB for the cleanest drift reading

USB is more reliable for the drift soak test than Bluetooth, because the connection stays stable without the controller entering a sleep state during the extended rest period. Connect by USB, press the PS button to register, then place the controller on a flat surface and leave it untouched for the test. A wired connection also avoids the intermittent signal drops that can occur when Bluetooth power management puts the controller to sleep mid-test.

After registration, press each face button in turn and watch the button grid light up so you can confirm the layout is reporting correctly before the drift check. If a control fails to respond after connecting, reseat the USB cable before assuming the controller is faulty, because a loose connection can interrupt the wired link and make an otherwise healthy controller appear unresponsive in the browser.

Left stick Y-axis: the most common DualShock 4 drift axis

On the DualShock 4, axis 1 represents the left stick Y-axis. Upward drift in the negative direction on this axis can make characters walk or look upward without stick contact. If your readings persist above the tester threshold, keep screenshots with both the numeric value and the canvas dot offset so you have clear evidence for a repair request.

Separating drift from normal calibration variation

Tiny values close to zero can be calibration noise, but values that persist above 0.05 across 30 seconds of untouched measurement are worth documenting. PlayStation provides controller repair support, so use the page readings as evidence and compare the result across two separate testing sessions rather than relying only on a short visual check. Run the test after the controller has been in use for a few minutes, because worn contacts can settle differently as the mechanism warms and make drift more apparent during a warm reading.3

Understanding L2 and R2 as axes in Chrome

Depending on your specific browser and OS combination, the L2 and R2 analog triggers on the DualShock 4 may appear as axes 4 and 5 in the Gamepad API readout rather than as standard button objects in the button grid. Both representations carry the same underlying trigger depth information, where 0.0 means the trigger is fully released and 1.0 means it is pressed to its maximum physical depth.4 This mapping variation is a normal consequence of how different platforms interpret the DualShock 4 USB HID descriptor and does not indicate a hardware fault.

Confirming smooth trigger travel

Press L2 and R2 slowly while watching the axis fill bars climb. Each trigger should transition smoothly from 0.0 at rest to 1.0 at full press with no sudden jumps or dead spots in the analog range. A trigger that remains above the tester resting threshold after full release is worth retesting after the controller has settled for a few seconds.
