8BitDo Pro 2 Controller Test: Stick Drift and Button Check
For browser testing, use X-input mode on the 8BitDo Pro 2. The controller has a 4-way mode switch for Switch, Android, D-input, and X-input, and it can connect by Bluetooth or USB-C. Turn the mode switch to X before powering on or reconnecting the controller. In X-input mode the controller presents itself as an Xbox-compatible gamepad, which browsers handle correctly with the standard button index assignments.1
The Pro 2 features two back paddle buttons, two analog sticks, two analog triggers, and Bluetooth or USB-C connectivity in X-input mode. The current Pro 2 product page lists Hall Effect joysticks, so do not use older potentiometer-based drift advice for this controller. Back paddles can be assigned through 8BitDo Ultimate Software, but the browser sees the final mapped button values rather than separate paddle inputs. This keeps the exposed layout stable during comparison checks.
To check for stick drift, leave both sticks untouched on a flat surface for 10 seconds after registering the controller and watch for any stable non-zero axis reading. The 8BitDo app and Ultimate Software can adjust stick sensitivity, trigger sensitivity, and button mapping, so compare any software reading with the browser value before deciding whether the hardware is drifting. If the browser and app disagree, repeat the test after resetting the active profile so you know which setting is affecting the exposed values. Keep the active profile unchanged during the comparison, because changing a setting mid-test can look like drift.

Entering X-input mode before connecting
Before connecting the 8BitDo Pro 2, turn the mode switch to X and then power on or reconnect the controller. The Windows Bluetooth manual says the controller enters pairing mode after the pair button is held for 3 seconds, and the LED becomes solid when the connection succeeds.2 In X-input mode, the Pro 2 presents itself as an Xbox-compatible gamepad, which browsers handle correctly with standard button index assignments. Without this step, the controller may connect in D-input mode, where the browser detects it with non-standard axis and button indices that do not match the labels on the controller.
Reconnecting after mode or profile changes
X-input mode supports both USB-C wired and Bluetooth connections. For the most reliable testing, use USB-C, because a wired connection avoids the latency and pairing quirks that can interrupt a long drift soak test. If you use Bluetooth in X-input mode, pair it through your OS Bluetooth settings first, then press a button on the controller to register it in the browser. After switching modes or profiles, unplug and replug the controller so the browser receives the updated device descriptor.
After the Pro 2 registers, press each face button and paddle in turn and watch the grid light up so you can confirm the active mapping profile before running the drift check. If a control fails to appear after a mode change, unplug and replug the controller first, because the browser only reads the device descriptor that was current at the moment of connection.
Testing the Pro 2 sticks for drift
The current Pro 2 product page lists Hall Effect joysticks, so this model should not be described as potentiometer-based. Hall Effect sticks still need a drift check because the browser reports the stick axes exposed by the active controller mode and firmware state. Place the controller flat on a desk after registering, leave both sticks untouched for 10 seconds, and read the axis values below each canvas.3
Hall Effect readings still need context
A fresh Pro 2 should read very close to 0.0 on all four axes at rest. Values above 0.05 represent early drift. This is the tester threshold, not a manufacturer wear rating, so use it to decide when to inspect the controller rather than as a formal warranty measurement. Hall Effect sensors resist the carbon-track wear that plagues traditional potentiometers, but they can still drift if the magnetic sensor array shifts or if the firmware calibration drifts after a firmware update.
Back paddles and firmware calibration in the browser
In X-input mode, the back paddles P1 and P2 on the 8BitDo Pro 2 do not appear as dedicated, fixed button indices in the browser Gamepad API. Instead, each paddle is assigned to an existing face button or bumper through 8BitDo Ultimate Software, so pressing a paddle lights up whichever button it is currently mapped to in the grid, which is how you confirm the Pro 2 paddle mapping without the app.2 Press each paddle in turn and note which grid position activates, because this tells you the active mapping profile without opening the configuration software.
Understanding software calibration and browser readings
8BitDo Ultimate Software can customize button mapping, stick sensitivity, trigger sensitivity, vibration intensity, and macro assignments for the Pro 2. Because all of these software settings directly affect what values the active controller mode reports through its USB or Bluetooth connection, you should compare the browser reading with the current software profile before deciding whether the hardware itself is drifting. The browser Gamepad API reports only the final button and axis values exposed by the connected gamepad; it does not expose the controller configuration software UI or the individual profile settings that produced those values.3
