Logitech F310 Gamepad Test: Stick Drift and Button Check

The Logitech F310 is a wired USB gamepad that works without additional drivers on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Before testing, set the mode switch on the back to X (XInput). In X mode the controller presents itself as an Xbox-compatible gamepad, which browsers handle consistently and with correct button index assignments. In D (DirectInput) mode, the browser may detect the device but with a non-standard button layout.

The F310 features 12 buttons, two analog sticks, and one D-pad. Unlike more expensive controllers, the F310 is wired-only with no Bluetooth support. Because it uses standard USB HID, no drivers are needed on any platform. Plug in, switch to X mode, and open the page in Chrome or Edge; the wired connection also makes it a useful reference when you are comparing a suspect wireless controller.

To test for stick drift, register the controller and leave both sticks untouched on a flat surface for 10 seconds. Both sticks use standard analog potentiometers, so drift can develop over time with heavy use. The D-pad appears as a button in X mode, so press each direction to confirm it registers cleanly in the button grid. A quick comparison against a newer controller is useful if the F310 is your oldest wired gamepad. A wired reference is especially useful when you are deciding whether a wireless controller needs repair.

Setting the mode switch before connecting

The mode switch on the back of the F310 is the most important setup step before connecting for browser testing. Set it to X, the XInput position, before plugging in the USB-A cable. In X mode the controller presents itself as an Xbox-compatible gamepad, which browsers handle consistently with correct button index assignments. In D mode, the DirectInput position, the browser may detect the device but with non-standard assignments that do not match the labeled controls1.

Reconnecting after changing modes

After switching to X mode, plug the controller into any USB-A port and press any button to register it in the browser. If you switch the mode after connecting, unplug the cable and replug it so the browser receives the new device descriptor. Chrome and Edge recognize the F310 in X mode without any additional drivers on Windows, macOS, or Linux.

After the F310 registers, press each face button and D-pad direction in turn and watch the button grid light up so you can confirm the XInput layout is reporting every control correctly. If a mapped control shows no response on USB, move to a different port before assuming the controller is faulty, because the wired descriptor refreshes only when the cable is reseated.

Testing the analog sticks for drift

After registering the controller, place it flat on a desk and leave both sticks untouched for 10 seconds before reading the axis values. The F310 uses standard analog potentiometers with the same carbon contact track mechanism as most gamepads. Drift can develop over time with heavy use, typically appearing first on whichever stick receives the most directional pressure in the games you play.

Why the F310 is a useful drift comparison baseline

Because the F310 is inexpensive and wired, it works well as a reference device alongside a controller you suspect of drifting. Connect both in turn during the same test session and compare resting axis values. A fresh F310 typically reads below 0.02 on all axes. If a more expensive controller reads 0.08 while the F310 reads 0.01, the hardware drift is clearly in the expensive controller rather than in your test setup.

D-pad and button response in X mode

In X mode, the F310's D-pad appears as four standard buttons in the button grid rather than as hat switch axes.2 Press each D-pad direction individually and confirm it lights up cleanly. A direction that shows no response after firm pressing has a worn membrane contact at that position.

Reading digital button release

The face buttons on the F310 are standard digital inputs, each showing a clean 0 or 1 value. The analog sticks produce continuous axis values between -1.0 and 1.0.3 If any analog axis reads 0.0 regardless of stick movement, the stick potentiometer on that axis has failed electrically. Wiggle the stick across its full range while watching the axis value. A value that stays at 0.0 throughout confirms an electrical failure rather than a calibration issue, the distinction that lets you tell a dead F310 stick from a loose cable before ordering parts. Swap the USB cable to a different port if the reading behaves erratically, because a loose connection can mimic an intermittent electrical fault.
