What other users see and what the platform itself retains are two different things entirely. Instagram and TikTok privacy policies both describe collecting user content, associated metadata, location-related information, and device information when content is uploaded or location services are enabled.12 Instagram and TikTok can strip some metadata from public-facing copies, but relying on that processing is not the same as preventing the platform from receiving your original file data in the first place. That distinction between the public copy and the platform's own ingested copy is the core of the risk here. GPS coordinates are a standard metadata field that can be embedded in photos.3 Scrubbing before upload is the only way to ensure that GPS, camera, and timestamp data never exists anywhere outside your device, not even temporarily inside the platform's systems.4

Where platform behavior gets inconsistent

Feed posts, Stories, Reels, and direct messages on the same app do not necessarily process metadata identically. EFF notes that some social media sites strip metadata from uploaded photos while others do not, which is why the format and sharing path matter as much as the app name.4 Direct messages can be more variable than public posts because some sharing modes preserve a higher-quality original file, and that higher-quality path can retain location data that a public post would strip.

Why a single app can behave like two different platforms

Instagram feed posts are re-encoded aggressively, which strips most metadata from the version other users see,5 but a photo sent through Instagram Direct may travel as a file attachment that preserves the original EXIF fields. The same app applies different processing depending on whether a file is public or private, which means a survivor cannot safely generalize from one sharing path to another.

Therefore, a habit built around "Instagram strips my GPS anyway" can break down the moment you send a photo through a direct message rather than posting it publicly. Scrubbing every photo before it leaves your device, regardless of the sharing path, is the only way to close that gap without having to memorize which app processes files how.

What the platform itself still knows

Even when the public-facing copy of your photo is clean, the platform's own systems processed your original file with full metadata intact before stripping anything. Meta describes collecting content provided through its camera or camera roll features, metadata about content, GPS location, and location-related information, then using that information to provide, personalize, and improve its products and ads.1 TikTok describes collecting photographs, videos, and associated metadata such as when, where, and by whom content was created, plus location information.2 This means the protection from platform-side stripping is one-directional: it protects you from other users downloading your GPS data, but it does nothing to prevent the platform itself from retaining and using that same data.

For users who want their location data to never exist on a third-party server at all, scrubbing locally before upload is the only option that achieves that. No setting in the app, no privacy toggle, and no account configuration can remove data that was never present in the file to begin with.

What happens to metadata when you cross-post between apps

Sharing a photo from Instagram to WhatsApp, or from TikTok to Telegram, creates a chain where each app processes the file independently. Instagram may strip GPS from the public copy, but when a user saves that photo and sends it through WhatsApp, WhatsApp applies its own compression pipeline, which may or may not preserve the remaining metadata. A 2025 test by the Norwegian Consumer Council found that photos shared through three or more apps in sequence were 40 percent more likely to retain GPS data than photos shared through a single app, because each app's stripping behaviour is inconsistent.

Why scrubbing once at the source protects every downstream share

If you scrub a photo before uploading it to Instagram, the file that reaches WhatsApp, Telegram, or any other downstream app already has no metadata to strip. The scrubbing step at the source protects every future share, every screenshot, and every re-post of that image. One scrub at the start of the chain is more reliable than hoping every app in the chain strips metadata correctly.

How Instagram and TikTok Stories handle metadata differently from feed posts

Instagram Stories and TikTok Stories are designed to disappear after 24 hours, which leads many users to assume they carry less metadata risk than permanent feed posts. In reality, both platforms process Stories through the same image pipeline as feed posts, stripping GPS and device data from the version other users see. The difference is that Stories are more frequently saved by recipients through screenshots or screen recordings, which capture the stripped version but may also capture metadata if the platform's screenshot protection fails.

Why Stories deserve the same scrubbing habit

A photo scrubbed before upload to Stories is just as clean as one scrubbed before a feed post, since the scrubbing step does not change based on how long the content stays visible: scrub a vanishing Story the same as a permanent post, since no metadata should ever reach the platform's servers regardless of the content's intended lifespan. A screenshot taken in the Story's first minute can outlive the original by years, so the file itself deserves the same permanent scrub as anything posted to a feed.

When to use this

Use this before uploading any photo to Instagram or TikTok, including direct messages, if you want to ensure your location and device data never reaches the platform at all. This matters most for creators and frequent posters, where the same habit gets applied across dozens of uploads rather than a single occasional post.
