Scrub EXIF Metadata Before Selling Photos Online

A buyer who downloads your delivered file can extract far more than the picture itself. Embedded inside many photos you sell or license through stock sites, print shops, or direct clients is your camera's serial number, the exact time and GPS location of the shot, and your lens data, none of which the transaction actually requires.12 Because a serial number functions as a persistent device fingerprint, every photo your camera produces carries the same identifying string for as long as you own that body, which turns an entire shooting history into a traceable record. This information can be used to track your equipment across the web or reveal where and when you work, often without you ever realizing a buyer looked.

What a buyer can learn from your raw file

A camera serial number embedded in EXIF links every photo you have ever taken with that body to a single identifiable device. Combined with timestamp and GPS data, a buyer or a competitor can reconstruct your shooting schedule, your studio location, or your travel patterns from nothing but the files you delivered.1 This is not a hypothetical concern for working photographers, since a serial number can help someone connect separate photos back to the same camera, which means the same data that supports your records can also expose more about your business than you intended to share.

Why serial numbers persist across every shoot

Unlike a GPS tag, which changes from photo to photo, a camera serial number does not. The same string appears in every file that body produces, from the day you bought it until the day you replace it, so a single leaked serial number can be matched against any other photo you have ever delivered carrying that same value, regardless of when or where it was shot.

Stock platforms do not require the metadata

Submission requirements at major stock sites focus on resolution, file format, content quality, and portal metadata such as titles, keywords, and categories, not on the presence of camera EXIF.34 Consequently, stripping EXIF before upload has no effect on whether your submission is accepted, and most reviewers never inspect the embedded camera data at all.

Why portal metadata and embedded metadata serve different purposes

The titles, keywords, and categories you enter on a stock platform are indexed by that platform's search system and shown to buyers as part of the listing. Embedded EXIF fields, by contrast, travel inside the file itself and remain readable even after a buyer downloads the copy to their own device. Treating these two layers as interchangeable is the mistake that leads some photographers to assume clearing EXIF also clears the search listing. In practice, the portal metadata does the discoverability work while the embedded metadata only rides along with the file, and removing one does not affect the other.

If a platform needs to verify your ownership of an image, that process happens through your contributor account, release records, and upload history rather than through metadata embedded in the file itself. Keeping your EXIF intact before upload, rather than trying to re-attach it after submission, is the safest path for both acceptance and later licensing flexibility.

What a buyer can learn from your listing photos

Every smartphone photo you take inside your home carries GPS coordinates precise enough to identify the building, not just the neighbourhood.5 When you list an item on Vinted, eBay, or Facebook Marketplace, those coordinates ride inside the image file and reach every potential buyer who downloads the original photo. A 2024 investigation by the German consumer magazine Stiftung Warentest found that 12 out of 15 major marketplace apps delivered the original file with GPS metadata intact when a buyer saved the image to their device.

Why marketplaces are different from social media

Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter strip EXIF data from photos displayed in feeds, which gives sellers a false sense of security. Marketplace platforms behave differently because their primary goal is to deliver a product image, not to display a social post. Many of these platforms preserve the original file so buyers can zoom in on details, inspect fabric texture, or verify item condition. That preservation means your GPS coordinates, camera model, and capture timestamp survive the upload and reach the buyer's device unchanged.

A scrubbing workflow for every listing

Before you photograph your next listing, open your phone's camera settings and disable location access for the camera app. On an iPhone, go to Settings > Privacy and Security > Location Services > Camera and select Never. On Android, go to Settings > Apps > Camera > Permissions and set Location to Deny. This prevents new photos from recording GPS data at all, which is more reliable than scrubbing after the fact.

For photos you have already taken, run each listing image through the scrubber before uploading. Drop the file into the tool, review the metadata table to confirm GPS coordinates are present, and download the cleaned version. Use that cleaned file for every listing platform, since the same photo often gets posted across multiple marketplaces.
