Basic

Four writing-pattern signals (sentence rhythm, transition-word density, word predictability, vocabulary variety) score your text instantly. Nothing downloads. These are lightweight heuristics rather than a trained model, so Basic can read differently from Advanced on formal or technical writing. Treat Advanced as the stronger signal when the two disagree. Basic also scans for hidden, non-printing Unicode characters in both modes, a separate, deterministic check unrelated to writing style.

The free tier caps each scan at 1,200 words and limits you to six scans a day, and Quillbot's own comparison table shows a "Create account" prompt attached to that free tier, not a fully anonymous option.1 Premium removes both limits, but only as part of a paid Quillbot subscription that also unlocks its paraphraser, grammar checker, and other writing tools.2 None of that is unreasonable for a company selling a writing suite. It just means the detector alone isn't really a standalone free product, it's a feature of one.

How Quillbot's free tier actually works

Quillbot's AI Detector recommends at least 80 words for an accurate read and caps free scans at 1,200 words, with a daily limit of six scans before you'd need to wait or upgrade.1 That's enough for a paragraph or a short section, but not a full essay or article in one pass.

The free tier also limits how much explanation you get back. Free accounts receive one rewrite card explaining a flagged section; Premium accounts get detailed explainers across the entire text.2 The headline percentage is available either way, but understanding exactly why a longer document scored the way it did is a Premium feature.

The daily scan limit

Hitting the daily cap doesn't lock you out of Quillbot entirely, but it does mean waiting until the count resets or switching to a different tool for the rest of the day. For someone checking several short pieces of correspondence or social posts in a single sitting, six scans disappears faster than it sounds. A single editing session covering a résumé, a cover letter, and a couple of social posts can burn through that daily allowance before lunch. Quillbot cites a 99% detection rate from independent RAID benchmark testing for its detector, the same benchmark family this tool's own Advanced classifier reports a score against.3

What running entirely in your browser changes

This tool has no 1,200-word ceiling and no daily scan count to track. Paste a full document once, or run it through five separate times after five rounds of edits, and nothing about the process changes or slows down, because every score computes locally instead of drawing against a daily allowance.

Testing whether a paragraph reads like it was written by AI works the same whether it's your first check of the day or your fiftieth. Every flagged reason comes with its own explanation and highlighted sentences from the very first scan, not just after a Premium upgrade, and none of that depth is held back behind an account you'd otherwise need to create.

That also removes any incentive to trim a document down just to fit inside a scan limit. A 3,000-word report doesn't need to be split into three separate 1,000-word chunks and checked individually, each losing whatever document-level context the full text would have provided to the signals measuring sentence rhythm and vocabulary variety across the whole piece.

Where Quillbot remains the stronger choice

Quillbot's real advantage is the bundle sitting around its detector. For someone whose entire editing process already lives inside Quillbot, that continuity is worth something real, even if it comes wrapped in the free tier's word and scan limits. Weigh that convenience against how often you actually hit the cap before deciding whether the trade-off works in your favor.

What this tool trades away in exchange

This tool doesn't try to be a writing suite, and it makes no attempt to replicate a paraphraser, a grammar checker, or a humanizer alongside its one job of scoring text for AI-typical patterns. It does that one job without a daily cap or a word ceiling attached to it.

If your workflow lives inside Quillbot already, the detector built into it costs you nothing extra to use. If detection is the only piece you need, the caps attached to that one feature stop making sense, and paying for a full writing suite just to reach unlimited detection is a poor trade for someone who only ever wanted the one feature. One caveat applies to both tools: published research on this category of detector has found that non-native English writers are disproportionately likely to be misflagged, since simpler sentence structures read as statistically predictable regardless of which detector runs the check.4 A separate academic evaluation of 14 commercial and open-source detection tools found accuracy varying widely between them, with performance consistently dropping once text had been paraphrased.5

When to use this
