Why booth photos get rejected

An exact rectangle does not guarantee acceptance. Issuing offices also inspect the subject's scale, eye position, and the background behind the head, so a photo can meet a paper size while missing the image requirements. A small head, a cropped crown, or a shadow that looked harmless on a phone can become the reason an application needs another photo.

Why the frame is not enough

An online service can create a different risk when it uploads the picture, replaces the background, or retouches the face. The U.S. Department of State specifically warns against changing a passport photo with software, phone apps, filters, or artificial intelligence.1 You need a crop that preserves the source pixels and a readout that exposes a likely problem before you spend money on prints.

This cropper keeps that job in one tab. You provide a JPEG, PNG, or WebP, or capture a still from the optional camera panel, then drag and scale the image beneath the selected frame. The compliance board reports output pixels, measured head height, measured eye line when available, background variance, and JPEG size, while a failed row stays visible without blocking your download.

Official sizes

Each country pill selects a stored frame size and the published limits represented in the current preset data. The tool derives pixel dimensions from millimetres or inches and the preset DPI, then rounds to whole pixels. For millimetre presets, the calculation follows px = mm / 25.4 × dpi, so the downloaded JPEG contains the selected frame rather than a larger canvas with a border around it.

Print size and digital size are different

UK printed photos use a 35 × 45 millimetre frame, with the head from crown to chin between 29 and 34 millimetres on a cream or light grey background.2 GOV.UK treats digital applications separately: its online flow asks for at least 600 × 750 pixels and can crop a photo taken during the application.3 Choose the UK pill for the printed crop, not as a replacement for that in-application capture flow.

The other presets follow the values recorded for this page. The US frame is 2 × 2 inches with a 25 to 35 millimetre head.1 Canada uses 50 × 70 millimetres and a 31 to 36 millimetre head.4 Australia permits a wider range, so this tool chooses 35 × 45 millimetres inside that range and uses a 32 to 36 millimetre head band.5 ICAO's Doc 9303 describes submitted portraits at 35 × 45 millimetres.6 For the Schengen preset, this tool converts the EU rule that the head should occupy 70 to 80 percent of the photo's height into a 32 to 36 millimetre crown-to-chin target within that frame.67 India uses 35 × 45 millimetres and produces 630 × 810 pixels at its stored DPI.8

The table reads from the same preset data as the cropper, which keeps the visible dimensions and output pixels aligned with the controls. Pass does not mean that an office has approved every possible photo. It means the current data has no stored limit for that row, so the tool does not invent one. India has no published head-height or eye-line limit in this preset data, and the board follows the same rule.

Head height and eye line

Head height describes the distance from the estimated crown to the chin inside the official frame. A head that sits too small usually leaves too much empty space, while a head that sits too large can lose the crown or chin. When a preset provides a head-height band, the shaded area on the crop canvas shows that target, and you can drag or zoom until the measured value sits inside it.

Use the guide as a starting point

The dashed guide shows the detected eye line when the optional face model finds both irises. The board expresses that measurement in millimetres from the bottom of the frame, but the current preset data does not store an eye-line band, so the row remains pass rather than pretending that a universal limit exists. Face Landmarker can seed the initial pan and scale from the chin, an estimated crown, and the irises; after that first suggestion, your drag and zoom controls remain in charge.9

If the model cannot load, the tool reports that fallback in the status line and keeps the manual workflow available. You can place the subject yourself with the crop canvas, drag gesture, zoom buttons, and keyboard controls. The compliance board continues to update as you move the image, so a missing model removes an automated hint without removing the cropper or its measurements.

Background uniformity

A plain background helps, but the tool cannot decide whether a wall satisfies every issuing office's visual standard. Instead, it gives you a repeatable signal. The background check samples luminance from the output frame outside a padded ellipse around the estimated head, then calculates the variance of those samples. That approach focuses the reading on the visible background while excluding the central subject area.

The board treats variance above 400 as a fail and displays the measured value beside the 400 maximum. A shadow, strong gradient, or busy room can raise the number, while even lighting on a simple background can lower it. The result remains a diagnostic, not a legal guarantee, so inspect the actual photo and the destination office's current instructions before you submit it.

A failed background row does not block Download JPEG or Download print sheet. Retake the picture instead of smoothing the skin or pasting in a new backdrop, because authorities may reject those edits even when the replacement background looks cleaner. Give yourself space from the wall and use even light when you need the variance reading to improve.

A digital application usually cares about the file's pixel dimensions and may also impose a byte limit. Download JPEG uses the selected preset's exact width and height, and the board reports the encoded JPEG size so you can compare it with a portal's instructions. The size row is a check, not an approval from the destination system, because each portal can apply additional rules about file size, color, or submission method.

Download print sheet creates one JPEG page with either four or six copies on A4 or 4 × 6 inch paper. The engine lays each copy at its true physical size using the selected preset dimensions and adds a light border around each cell. If the requested number cannot fit on the chosen paper at that size, the tool keeps the largest fitting count and reports the reduction in the status line instead of shrinking the photos silently.

The sheet solves the layout step, not every print requirement. Australian applications can specify photographic paper and printing conditions, while UK paper applications ask for two identical 35 × 45 millimetre prints that remain loose rather than attached to the form.25 Check the destination office's current instructions, tell the print shop the intended physical size, and verify the result with a ruler after printing.

What stays on this device

The page processes the picture in the browser. Image decoding, panning, scaling, compliance measurement, JPEG encoding, and print-sheet rendering happen in this tab, and the page does not upload the image for a server-side crop. You can inspect network activity while you work; the optional face guide may request its JavaScript, WebAssembly, and model assets, but those requests do not carry the photo pixels.

Camera permission starts only after you open the camera panel and click Enable Camera. Uploading a file does not request camera access, and denying that permission leaves the upload path available. The camera preview stays in the tab, and the capture panel does not record or upload a frame. If the optional model host or CDN is unavailable, manual cropping still works.

HEIC and HEIF are not decoded by this tool, so convert those files to JPEG on your device before selecting them. After you close the tab, the page no longer holds the in-memory image or the generated output. That local workflow gives you a direct way to prepare a crop without creating an account or placing a copy of your identity photo in a processing queue.
