Testing a Webcam With AI Framing
A webcam that moves the frame is harder to test than one that stays put. Auto-framing and AI tracking change the crop while you measure, so a framing reading taken with tracking live describes the camera's decision rather than your position. The routine that works is the same on every model here: measure once with tracking off to see your actual framing and light, then switch it on and watch what the camera does with them.
Each section below covers the model's own tracking behaviour, what its software exposes, and the faults that show up in a browser rather than in the app. Start with the shared routine, then go to your camera.
Recommended tests for a webcam with AI framing
- Framing Guide: measure once with tracking off, then again with it on, so you see both your position and the camera's crop
- Lighting Check: a motorised camera changes its angle to your lights, so recheck after it settles
- Resolution & FPS: the browser receives only what the page requests, which is often below what the sensor can produce
Opens the Webcam Test with this page's recommended tests marked.
Open in the tool →Testing a camera that moves the frame
Run the Framing Guide with tracking and auto-framing switched off. That reading is yours: eye line, face width and centring at the distance you actually sit. Then turn the feature on, let the camera settle, and run the same test again. If the second reading pulls your face towards the centre of the frame, the feature is doing its job; if it crops in on your face during a call where you want to show something on the desk, it is working against you and belongs off for that meeting.
Do the same with the Lighting Check. A pan, tilt or zoom movement changes the camera's angle to your window, lamp and monitor, and a camera in auto-exposure mode adjusts its exposure, and sometimes its frame rate, to the light it now sees, so a reading taken before the move describes the old position.1 Take the reading after the camera stops moving, and treat the resolution and frame rate panels as a separate question: a 4K sensor still sends what the page asks for, and most meeting apps ask for 1080p or less.2

OBSBOT Tiny 2 Webcam Test
Designed as a motorized PTZ webcam, the OBSBOT Tiny 2 combines AI tracking, auto zoom, and gesture controls, delivering up to 4K/30fps and 1080p/60fps.1 The pan, tilt, and zoom mechanics allow the camera to follow a subject automatically across a desk or room. Gesture-based commands can trigger zoom, tracking, and other modes without touching the camera, so the setup matters most when you want hands-free control during presentations or live streams.2
Your browser delivers the resolution requested by the page or application, so the number shown in this tool is the practical result for that session. This tool reports the actual resolution and frame rate your browser tab receives, then verifies your lighting balance in whichever tracking mode is active before you go live. Because motorized movement can shift your position relative to the light, recheck the score after the camera settles into its tracking pose for the call.3
Recommended tests for OBSBOT Tiny 2
- Lighting Check: the motorized tracking position can shift the camera angle relative to windows and lamps, so the balance score should be checked with the camera in its tracking-locked position
- Resolution & FPS: the browser only receives the resolution the requesting app asks for, so 4K sensor output shows as 1080p in most calls unless a recording workflow explicitly requests 4K

AI tracking in video calls: managing when it helps and when it distracts
AI tracking on the Tiny 2 follows detected subjects using the onboard processing in the camera firmware. In seated calls where you stay roughly stationary, tracking may add little benefit, and a manual camera angle can look steadier because the motor is not making small corrections between framing decisions that produce visible micro-movements in the video feed. Where tracking earns its keep is the mechanical range behind it: the gimbal travels 140 degrees horizontally in either direction and between 30 and -70 degrees vertically, which is far more travel than a fixed-focus clip webcam can offer.4
Compare tracking-locked and resting positions
For standing presentations or room-scale video calls where you move significantly across the available space, tracking can maintain framing that would otherwise require manual adjustment. Check the lighting balance score in this tool with tracking enabled: the motor positioning change as tracking locks on to the subject can shift the camera angle relative to your lighting sources and affect the score. Setting up your lighting with the camera in its tracking-locked position, rather than its default resting position, ensures the score reflects actual recording conditions.
If you switch between tracking and manual modes during a session, verify the score in both states. The camera may rest at a different pan angle when tracking is disabled, which changes how light from windows or overhead fixtures enters the lens. A quick re-check in this tool after toggling tracking avoids a situation where you join the call with the camera in a position you did not validate, producing an unexpected lighting balance shift mid-meeting.
Gesture control management: preventing accidental triggers during calls
When gesture control is enabled, hand shapes within the camera frame can trigger camera modes such as zoom, target selection, and tracking without any physical contact with the camera or software. During animated video calls, natural hand gestures can match these patterns and trigger unwanted camera behaviour mid-conversation, which is distracting for both you and the other participants who see the camera suddenly zoom or shift.
Disabling gestures in OBSBOT Center
OBSBOT Center on Windows and macOS provides a setting to disable gesture recognition entirely. In gesture-disabled mode, the camera requires explicit app commands to change mode, eliminating accidental triggers. For video calls and live streams where hand movement is natural, disabling gesture control is the recommended configuration. Re-enable gestures only when the explicit gesture-trigger workflow is preferable to app controls.2 A raised hand, a thumbs-up, or even resting your chin on your palm can match one of the recognised gesture patterns, so if you notice the camera zooming or shifting tracking targets during a call, the first thing to check is whether gesture control is still enabled in OBSBOT Center.
One caveat is worth knowing before you rely on gestures as your only control path. Independent testing found the tracking lock itself functioned reliably, but the zoom gestures did not.4 Gesture control on this camera is a convenience layer over the zone, hand, and voice tracking modes that OBSBOT positions alongside it, all reachable from the bundled software over a USB 3.0 connection.5 If a gesture does not fire, the camera is not broken, and switching to OBSBOT Center or a voice command is the dependable fallback.
Understanding the 4K to 1080p resolution gap in standard applications
The Tiny 2 can deliver high-resolution video, but a video call or browser tab receives the resolution that its getUserMedia constraints request, and the browser negotiates the final stream settings with the camera firmware. If the requesting page asks for a 1080p stream, the browser resolves the camera to that resolution instead of automatically delivering the maximum hardware mode, which means the 4K sensor output is downscaled before it ever reaches the application.
Verifying 4K delivery in recording workflows
For direct recording in OBS or similar software where you control the getUserMedia constraints, set the camera to request 4K explicitly, then let the resolution readout stand in for a full Tiny 2 3840×2160 stream confirmation instead of trusting the OBS source label alone. The 1080p ceiling on most conferencing platforms means the Tiny 2's 4K capability provides its most value in direct recording workflows rather than standard video calls.3 When you switch between tracking, auto zoom, or manual pan and tilt, re-check the readout because the browser tab may continue to show the previous stream until the camera control change fully settles. A short verification pass after each mode change prevents a presenter from discovering the wrong framing after the audience has already joined.

Open OBSBOT Center and disable gesture control in settings. In gesture-disabled mode, the camera relies on explicit app commands rather than in-frame hand gestures, which is usually better for calls where natural hand movement is visible to the camera.
The motor is most noticeable when tracking is actively moving the camera. If you sit still during a desk call, turn AI tracking off and set a manual angle to keep the camera quiet and steady.
The browser receives the resolution requested by the page or application. The OBSBOT Tiny 2 can deliver 4K, but the receiving application must explicitly request it. CapyToolkit shows the actual resolution delivered to the browser tab.
AI tracking relies on face detection, which works best when the subject has clear contrast and steady frontal lighting. If tracking drifts, improve the lighting balance score first, then retest with tracking enabled.
Yes. OBSBOT says essential features such as AI tracking, gesture control, and voice control can work without the app. OBSBOT Center is still useful for settings such as disabling gestures, controlling PTZ, and accessing additional features.
Insta360 Link 2 Webcam Test
With a 1/2" CMOS sensor, a 2-axis gimbal, and AI tracking, the Insta360 Link 2 delivers up to 4K/30fps with an F1.8 lens.1 Insta360 describes the larger sensor and HDR processing as low-light support, but the practical call image still depends on your lighting, framing, and the resolution your browser receives.1
Straight lines near the frame edges can look curved when the camera is close to a monitor or whiteboard. This tool helps you check the actual lighting balance and delivered resolution before you rely on that framing for a call. Because gimbal movement can change the camera angle relative to windows and lamps, the score should be checked after tracking or zoom settles for the call.
Recommended tests for Insta360 Link 2
- Resolution & FPS: the gimbal and Link Controller features renegotiate the stream, so the resolution and FPS reading should be rechecked after each mode change rather than trusting a reading from a different mode
- Framing Guide: moving the camera slightly farther from a monitor or whiteboard reduces edge distortion and often improves the face-to-frame ratio at the same time

Checking the browser stream before a Link Controller session
Link Controller can be useful when you need the camera-specific controls, but the browser-facing result still comes from the media stream your page receives. This tool reads that stream through getUserMedia, the same browser API used by conferencing and streaming pages, so the resolution and frame rate readout shows what the browser tab is actually receiving.3
Verify the controller workflow in the browser
Use this check before a call when you are switching between a basic webcam stream and a Link Controller workflow. If the browser result looks stable here, you have a cleaner baseline for deciding whether a controller feature is improving the setup or adding avoidable complexity. If the readout changes after enabling tracking, portrait mode, or auto zoom, treat the new readout as the real call condition and adjust your light and framing again. Do not rely on a clean result from one mode when the camera will be moving in another mode during the meeting.
If you toggle a Link Controller feature and the preview flickers or the readout jumps, the camera is renegotiating the stream. Wait a few seconds for the new mode to settle, then re-check the resolution, FPS, and framing in this tool before assuming the new mode is stable. A brief verification cycle after each controller change prevents you from joining a call with a frame rate that drops halfway through the meeting because the camera was still settling into its new mode.
Reducing edge distortion without overcorrecting the setup
If straight lines curve near the edges of the frame, first try moving the camera slightly farther from the monitor or whiteboard and reducing the amount of edge-heavy background in the shot. Narrower framing can reduce the visible distortion without changing the whole call setup. The Link 2's gimbal makes this adjustment straightforward because you can reposition the camera angle through the Link Controller app without physically remounting anything.
Start with camera position before software correction
Move the camera first, then retest the preview before adding OBS filters. A small change in distance or angle often reduces edge curvature while also improving the lighting balance score, because the same movement can move bright monitor edges or windows out of the frame. Physical adjustments are more reliable than software correction because they address the root cause rather than compensating for it after the fact, and they work in every application without requiring OBS or third-party plugins.
OBS lens correction as a software alternative
OBS can use third-party scripts such as UnFish Lens to apply a fish-eye or barrel distortion correction filter to a video source. This is useful when you can route the camera through OBS before a call or stream; for direct conferencing app use, simpler framing changes are usually less fragile.4 After moving the camera, re-check the lighting balance score because a different angle can change which window, lamp, or bright monitor edge dominates the frame. A good workflow is to set the camera angle first, then tune lighting, then confirm the browser resolution. That order prevents the gimbal from changing position after the light is balanced.
Sensor size and aperture: managing low-light expectations accurately
The spec sheet matters, but it does not replace a lighting check. A larger sensor and faster aperture can help, yet the live preview and lighting balance score show whether your current room is giving the camera enough frontal light for a clean call image. The 1/2-inch sensor and F1.8 aperture on the Link 2 are genuine hardware advantages, but they still depend on adequate scene illumination to deliver the clean, detailed output that the specifications promise. Independent testing puts a sharper edge on that: the 4K mode is noisy enough to soften fine detail, and the noise shows up even in well-lit rooms, so the pixel count on the spec sheet overstates how much detail you actually see.5
Adjust the light first, then retest the preview and FPS. The F1.8 aperture helps, but Link 2 lighting balance improvement from a brighter room usually matters more than the lens spec alone; if the image is still dim or noisy afterward, the issue is likely camera position or application processing rather than the sensor itself. In low light, the Link 2 may also rely on processing that smooths texture, so the most reliable improvement is still a brighter, more balanced frontal source. Even a small LED panel at screen height can reduce gain and make the camera's HDR processing less aggressive.

Dell UltraSharp WB7022 Webcam Test
For desk calls where framing, lighting, and camera controls matter, the Dell UltraSharp WB7022 is a 4K business webcam with AI Auto Framing and multiple field-of-view choices. It can work well for single-person setups, but AI Auto Framing can fight intentional off-center composition for presentations or demonstrations where specific framing is required.
Flicker under office lighting is still worth checking before the call starts. If the image shows rolling bands, the issue is usually environmental rather than a sign that the camera is failing. Use this tool to verify your lighting balance and check whether auto-framing is altering your intended composition before calls begin on the active device.

AI auto-framing: when to enable it and when to turn it off
AI Auto Framing on the WB7022 can change the camera crop automatically when the feature is enabled.1 For users who frequently move their chair, stand up briefly, or work from varying distances during the same call, that can keep the framing consistent without manual camera adjustment. For calls where you maintain a fixed desk position throughout, the feature can fight your intended composition, especially when you deliberately place a monitor, whiteboard, or product demo off to one side.
Disable auto-framing for fixed compositions
Dell Peripheral Manager provides the camera controls for this setting. With auto-framing disabled, position the camera so your face occupies 35–50% of the frame at your standard desk distance. This tool's framing guide confirms both face-to-frame ratio and headroom alignment simultaneously. For presentations or demonstrations where specific framing is required, disable auto-framing before the call and verify the composition in this tool.
If auto-framing is left on by mistake, the camera may re-crop mid-call when you lean to one side to show a document or gesture toward a screen. A quick pre-call check in this tool with the feature toggled both ways shows whether your intended framing survives the AI logic or whether manual control is necessary. Saving the manual composition as your default in Dell Peripheral Manager ensures the camera opens in the right state for every session.
Configuring anti-flicker for fluorescent and LED tube office environments
Horizontal bands scrolling through the frame occur when the WB7022's shutter rate does not align with the power line frequency of the room's fluorescent, LED, or LCD lighting. Dell's support guidance identifies artificial lighting as a cause of WB7022 flicker and recommends enabling Anti-Flicker in Dell Peripheral Manager's Color and Image settings.2
Identifying your local power frequency
The matching setting depends on your local mains frequency. Most countries in Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia run their mains at 50 Hz, while the United States and Canada run at 60 Hz.3 Select the matching frequency in Dell Peripheral Manager's anti-flicker menu, then watch this tool's live preview and keep the setting that eliminates the rolling bands. Choosing the wrong frequency amplifies banding rather than reducing it, so the live preview confirms the correct selection.
Pairing an external microphone with the WB7022 in standard OS configurations
When a WB7022 is the active camera and a separate USB microphone is connected to the same machine, the browser and conferencing app treat them as separate media inputs. Browser media APIs request audio and video as separate track types, and Teams exposes microphone and camera choices as separate device dropdowns.45 No special configuration is needed to pair an external microphone with this camera.
In Teams, select the USB microphone as the audio input device and the WB7022 as the video input device in the application's device settings. The combination works without driver conflicts. If the conferencing app defaults to a different microphone on startup, check the app's audio input preference setting and set it to the desired USB microphone explicitly. This pairing is stable across session restarts as long as both devices are connected when the app starts. Because the camera has no built-in microphone, treat audio device selection as part of the pre-call check rather than assuming the operating system will choose the best input.
Make audio part of the pre-call check
Before you join, open the conferencing app's device menu and confirm the USB microphone is selected, not the laptop mic. A two-second glance at WB7022 framing after a microphone swap costs nothing and catches the rare case where the reconnect nudged the frame. Because the WB7022 has no built-in microphone, forgetting to switch the audio input is a common mistake that results in echo or no sound at all during the call; making this check a habit before every meeting prevents the awkward moment of troubleshooting audio while everyone waits.

Open Dell Peripheral Manager, select the WB7022, and navigate to the framing settings. Auto-frame can be toggled off, reverting to your manually set composition. Disabling auto-frame is recommended when you need a specific framing for presentations or when standing and sitting at different distances during a call.
Open Dell Peripheral Manager, go to Color and Image, and enable Anti-Flicker. Match the setting to your local mains frequency, then verify in CapyToolkit that the image is stable after changing it.
Any USB microphone, headset microphone, or dedicated USB audio interface works independently of the camera. Windows, macOS, and Linux select microphones and cameras as separate devices, so pairing an external microphone with the WB7022 requires no special configuration.
Yes. The camera works with supported macOS versions, and Dell Display and Peripheral Manager provides many customization features on macOS. Some features, including presence detection, ExpressSign-In, capture, and auto installation, are not available on macOS.
AI auto-framing targets the detected face and centres the digital crop on it. When you gesture with your arms or move objects into frame, the algorithm can misinterpret the motion as a subject shift and re-crop. For demonstrations where your hands or objects must remain in frame, disable auto-framing and set the camera position manually.
Anker PowerConf C300 Webcam Test
When frame rate, framing, and low-light handling matter on desk calls for business meetings, the Anker PowerConf C300 is a 1080p webcam with several convenience features. Anker lists it at 1080p/60fps, with AI framing, face tracking, auto low-light correction, dual microphones, and a privacy cover.
In backlit rooms or rooms with bright windows, AI exposure can help, but your position relative to light sources is still the main control you can manage without adding lights. Use this tool to verify your lighting balance and check whether autofocus or framing changes are affecting your call image. A pre-call check also helps you spot whether the privacy cover is still closed, whether the browser is receiving 60fps, and whether the selected field of view matches the meeting format before you start the meeting.
Recommended tests for Anker PowerConf C300
- Framing Guide: autofocus can visibly hunt when leaning forward or back during animated conversation, so testing in your actual seated call position gives an accurate reading
- Lighting Check: AI exposure handles some backlight but a bright window can still dominate the scene, so the balance score shows whether repositioning actually closed the gap

Reducing autofocus hunting: distance and movement factors
When you move your head forward and backward during animated conversation, the C300's autofocus system can visibly search for a new focus point. Fast movement can show a brief soft frame before the image settles, so a steady desk distance helps the camera keep the same focus zone. The hunting is most visible when you lean forward to emphasise a point or pull back to look at a second monitor, because each distance change forces the AF system to re-evaluate from scratch.
Stabilize the subject before judging image quality
Tom's Guide lists 1080p at 60 fps or 30 fps, with the frame rate switchable in Anker's companion app.2 Keep your seating distance steady, reduce forward-reaching gestures, and choose a visually plain background when you need the most stable image. Running this tool while sitting in your normal call position, rather than leaning in briefly to check the preview, gives you a far more accurate reading of what the camera actually sees during a real meeting.
If the preview in this tool shows consistent softness even at a fixed distance, the room lighting may be the cause rather than autofocus hunting. Dim lighting forces the sensor to raise gain, which adds noise and reduces apparent sharpness. Adding a frontal fill light often resolves softness that looks like a focus issue but is actually signal-to-noise degradation at high ISO. Check the FPS readout: if the camera drops below 30 fps, the room is too dim for stable AF performance at 1080p.
Comparing the C300 and C920: frame rate and framing
Official specs matter more than aperture numbers when comparing these two cameras. Anker lists the C300 at 1080p/60fps with adjustable 78°, 90°, and 115° fields of view, while Logitech lists the C920 at 1080p/30fps with a fixed 78° field of view.13 If you need 60fps for streaming or smoother motion, the C300 has the clearer advantage. If you only need standard 30fps calls, both cameras can frame a single-person desk setup cleanly in good lighting.
The field-of-view difference is more practical than a simple resolution comparison. Start with the C300's 78° setting for tighter background exclusion, then move to 90° or 115° when you need more room in the shot. Wider settings are useful when you need to show a second monitor, a product, or a seated posture with more headroom, but they also pull the face smaller in the frame. Narrower settings make the subject look larger and reduce background distractions, which is often the better choice for ordinary video calls. Check the framing guide after changing FOV because the same chair position can move from professional to too tight in one setting change.
Using the 78° field of view for tighter framing in busy backgrounds
At 78° FOV, the C300 captures a narrower scene than its 90° or 115° settings at the same working distance. This is useful in home offices where bookshelves, cluttered desks, or windows appear behind you at wider FOV settings: the 78° crop can exclude more background without adding a virtual background. The camera has no optical zoom lens, so all three angles are digital crops of the same sensor, and narrowing the angle costs resolution rather than gaining a sharper image.4
Checking effective framing at 78° FOV in this tool
At a typical 60 cm working distance, 78° FOV sits near the tighter end of the professional framing target. Moving slightly farther back opens the framing while keeping more background out of the shot. Use the face width reading in this tool to find the distance where your framing ratio and background exclusion work together. If the C300's AI framing is enabled, compare the same desk position with framing on and off. The automatic crop can change the face-to-frame ratio during the call, so the manual position that looks correct at rest may not remain correct once tracking begins.
Compare AI framing on and off
Treat AI framing as a feature to verify before you depend on it, not something to switch on and forget. Anker splits the behaviour into two modes: Self Frame holds your head in the middle of a tighter frame as you move, while Auto Frame widens out to detect multiple people in shot, and at least one reviewer rated the camera slightly buggy during testing.5 For ordinary seated calls, turn it off and keep the manual FOV setting, because a fixed composition is easier for teammates to follow. With AI framing enabled, the background shifts throughout the call as the crop tracks you. Toggle C300 face crop stability with AI framing while gesturing normally; a shifting background is what viewers notice first, not a slightly imperfect fixed frame.
