Klipsch RP-600M Speaker Test: Tractrix Horn and Frequency Sweep Guide
Start the RP-600M sweep lower than you would for most bookshelf speakers. This passive Klipsch design combines a 6.5-inch Cerametallic woofer, a 1-inch Linear Travel Suspension tweeter, and a Tractrix horn, then uses 96 dB sensitivity to reach high SPL with far less amplifier power than conventional designs.1
The Tractrix horn crossover at 1.65 kHz is lower than most conventional bookshelf designs, placing the horn-to-woofer integration point well below the presence band. Sweep slowly through 1.3–2 kHz to assess the transition. A smooth, consistent sine tone through this range confirms the crossover is working correctly.2 Any audible step in character (a thinning or brightening of the tone as you cross 1.65 kHz) indicates the crossover slopes are not integrating as designed, which could point to a component-level issue or an impedance mismatch between the speaker and your amplifier.
Below the woofer range, the 6.5-inch Cerametallic cone provides extended low-frequency output down to 45 Hz. Sweep from 80 Hz downward and listen for the port reinforcement peak near 50–55 Hz, followed by a rapid rolloff. The RP-600M is a passive speaker with no built-in protection; sustained sine tones well below port tuning push the woofer into the overexcursion region. Keep testing brief below 45 Hz and volume moderate.

Cerametallic cone character in the 1–3 kHz midrange
Cerametallic cone material produces a distinctly different sweep character in the 1–3 kHz range compared to paper or polypropylene woofer cones at the same driver size.3 Sweep slowly from 1 kHz to 3 kHz and listen for the tonal quality of the sine tone at each frequency. Ceramic-coated metal cones maintain a stiffer, more controlled pistonic range than organic materials, extending linear operation to higher frequencies before the cone begins to flex non-uniformly. On the sweep, this produces a consistently pure sine tone through 2 kHz compared to paper-cone woofers of similar size, which often show a slight roughening as they approach their upper operating limit.
Confirming the 1.65 kHz crossover integration is correct
The crossover handoff at 1.65 kHz is lower than most bookshelf designs, meaning the Tractrix horn takes over well below the presence band. Sweep from 1.3 kHz to 2 kHz and listen for whether the sine tone character changes smoothly or abruptly at the handoff. A smooth integration sounds like a gradual shift in tonal character, not a step change. An abrupt step at one specific frequency can indicate a crossover network component that has drifted from specification or an impedance mismatch between the speaker and your amplifier output.
Calibrating volume before the first full sweep
Calibrating your listening level before the first full sweep prevents false impressions about the RP-600M's character at different frequencies. At 96 dB sensitivity, the RP-600M produces substantially more acoustic output per amplifier watt than typical passive bookshelf speakers. A volume control position that sounds moderate with an 88 dB speaker delivers several additional dB of SPL from the RP-600M. Start with your volume control at roughly two-thirds of your normal setting for lower-sensitivity speakers, run a brief 1 kHz tone to assess the level, and only then begin the diagnostic sweep.
Setting the gain reference before sweeping low frequencies
The low-frequency range below 60 Hz is where gain miscalibration creates the most risk on the RP-600M. Because 96 dB sensitivity means the amplifier delivers useful power well before the volume control reaches maximum, the 6.5-inch woofer approaches its excursion limit sooner than the amplifier approaches its power limit. Set your test volume at a level where the 80 Hz tone sounds comfortable and full, note the volume control position, and maintain that setting throughout the low-frequency sweep.
Returning to the calibrated level after high-SPL port tests
If you increase volume to test port behavior at higher SPL and then sweep back into the 40–60 Hz range, return to your calibrated level first. The RP-600M's sensitivity means a 3 dB increase at the amplifier translates directly to a 3 dB increase in woofer excursion demand in the deep bass, which crosses the linear operating boundary faster than on less sensitive designs.
The practical rule is to treat the calibrated volume as the only reference for low-frequency judgements, because the high sensitivity means any departure scales straight into cone travel. If a port test pushed the level up, write down the original position before you started so you can return to it exactly rather than guessing by ear. Comparing deep-bass behaviour at two different volumes tells you about your gain staging, not about the woofer, so set gain before the deep-bass pass and keep the setting fixed for the diagnostic.
