Samsung Odyssey G7 Monitor Test - Dead Pixels and Backlight Check
Use the Samsung Odyssey G7 when you want to know whether VA contrast, black smearing, or edge bleed is affecting your setup. The Samsung Odyssey G7 is a 240 Hz 1440p VA panel in either 27" or 32" size with a 1000R curvature. Assessing black crushing on the Odyssey G7
Black crushing is the defining test for VA panels, and the Odyssey G7's high native contrast makes near-black tonal separation important to check.2 Black crushing occurs when shadow detail near absolute black merges into pure black, compressing the tonal range between the darkest grey and pure black. Gaming scenes with dark environments are the most affected in everyday use.
How to check for black crushing
Open the gradient pattern and look at the near-black end of the tonal range. On a properly performing G7, the darkest grey steps should each be individually distinguishable from the pure black step. If those steps merge into a single undifferentiated region, black crushing is significant enough to affect shadow detail in dark gaming content. Compare the near-black end against the near-white end of the same gradient. VA panels typically reproduce near-white tones clearly, making that asymmetry a useful diagnostic for how severe the shadow-end compression actually is on your specific unit.3

Retest the G7 after you have chosen the refresh rate and response-time mode you actually plan to use, because a panel can look meaningfully different at 60 Hz, 120 Hz, and 240 Hz when the overdrive path and VRR state change with the signal. If you only test once at a single configuration, you may capture a setup artefact specific to that mode rather than the true characteristics of the monitor itself, which is why multi-state testing is essential before filing any return claim.
Start with the fixed refresh rate you use most often, then repeat the key patterns with VRR enabled and compare the results side by side. If a smudge, smear, or glow patch is only visible during one state, note that state precisely in your return notes so support can reproduce the conditions. If the same issue appears in both fixed-refresh and VRR testing, the evidence is much stronger for a warranty or return discussion because the problem is independent of the refresh mode.
VA smearing and 240 Hz verification on the G7
At 240 Hz, the Odyssey G7 requires aggressive pixel overdrive to keep response times competitive, so the interplay between smearing and overshoot becomes the central motion-quality question at this refresh rate. Start with the middle response-time preset, then test Faster or Extreme settings for overshoot, keeping in mind that each step up in aggressiveness trades reduced smearing against increased inverse ghosting. Inverse ghosting appears as a bright halo ahead of fast objects on dark backgrounds, which is visually distinct from the dark trailing smear of underdrive.4
To assess smearing accurately, use the response time test pattern while tracking a moving element across the screen with your eyes under controlled room lighting. True VA smearing appears as a dark shadow trailing behind fast objects on dark backgrounds, most visible during high-contrast transitions. At 240 Hz, frame intervals are short enough (4.17 ms per frame) that smearing is less pronounced than on the same VA panel at 60 Hz, but it remains more visible than on comparable IPS panels pushed to the same refresh rate.5
Confirming pixel and backlight checks
After assessing motion characteristics thoroughly, run the dead pixel and backlight tests at your usual refresh rate to complete the panel evaluation. Holding 240 Hz is not necessary for static pattern testing because pixel defects and backlight anomalies remain visible at any stable refresh rate once the signal is consistent. The full black pattern in a dark room shows the VA's deep black level directly, making it easier to distinguish between the panel's native glow characteristics and actual backlight bleed at the edges. Confirm the contrast advantage over IPS is present and genuine before moving on to the mid-grey uniformity check.
Uniformity check and dead pixel sweep on the Odyssey G7
After the motion tests, run the backlight uniformity check to confirm VA panel consistency. Open the mid-grey pattern from straight-on at your normal seating distance under standard room lighting. VA panels can show dirty screen effect, meaning patches or streaks of slightly different brightness on neutral mid-grey content that are static relative to the panel position. The Odyssey G7 is a 1000R curved panel, so check uniformity straight-on before judging edge-to-edge variation, and resist the urge to twist your viewing angle mid-test because that changes the apparent brightness of any patch you find.
Mild DSE is expected and common on curved VA at 27 and 32 inches, and most units show faint banding near the side bezels that only appears on mid-grey at close range. Pronounced patches visible without deliberate scrutiny at your normal viewing position are grounds for a return, so compare what you see against your seating distance rather than pressing your face to the glass during a quick check.6
Running the dead pixel sweep on the G7
After the uniformity check, run the dead pixel sweep across all six solid colour patterns in order: red, green, blue, white, black, and grey. Spend 30 seconds on each pattern and scan methodically from corner to corner so you do not miss a defect sitting near the bezel edge where pixels are easy to overlook on a curved panel. A constant-colour dot on the black field that does not appear at the same position on the green and blue patterns is a stuck pixel rather than a dead one.
Stuck pixels sometimes respond to a gentle pressure cycle or a rapid colour-flashing exercise before a warranty claim becomes the only remaining option, so try those steps before filing your return if the dot is not a bright always-on defect.
